Batu Bolong, a pinnacle in the middle of the Lintah Strait, is one of the signature dive sites of Komodo and exposed to strong currents due to its location. What looks like a small rock with a hole from the surface, is a giant pinnacle underwater going down to about 70m, currents rushing around it on each side.
As a consequence, beautiful hard corals and sponges cover the entire dive site but outstanding is the incredible volume of fish life congregating. Big Napoleon Wrasses, White Tip Reef Sharks, Hawksbill and Green Turtles, Giant Sweetlips and even Mantas cruise along in deeper waters. The shallows are covered with smaller reef fishes like Anthias, Damsels and Chromis, finding themselves in a constant battle for feeding rights.
On a good day at Batu Bolong it is like watching an underwater stage: an invisible director shouts out “Aaaaand ACTION!!!” and what happens next is just fish Mayhem! Giant and Bluefin Trevallies shooting around, chasing and hunting down a huge bait ball of Fusiliers. The sky disappearing in a dark cloud of small fish, rushing around and trying to escape their predators. The whole play can last for an entire dive and the speedy hunt is an adrenaline pump for both – fish and divers!
